Is Anyone Listening (CH 2)

Is Anyone Listening?

The ability to listen effectively is consistently rated as one of the most important skills necessary for success in the workplace. A survey of North American executives reveals that 80 percent believe that listening is one of the most important skills needed in the corporate environment. The same survey participants, however, also rated the skill as one of the most lacking. Effective listening is crucial to providing quality service, facilitating groups, training staff, improving teamwork, and supervising and managing for improved performance. In times of stress and change, effective listening is the cornerstone of workplace harmony, since it furthers interpersonal and intercultural understanding. Listening is more than just hearing. It is an interactive process that takes concentration and commitment.
Although listening is critical to our daily lives, it is taught and studied far less than the other three basic communication skills: reading, writing, and speaking. Overreliance on television and computers also contributes to our listening problems. Much of the trouble we have communicating with others is because of poor listening skills. Studies show that we spend about 80 percent of our waking hours communicating, and at least 45 percent of that time listening. Most people can benefit from improving their listening skills. You can arrive at a fairly accurate assessment of your listening skills by thinking about your relationships with the people in your life—your boss, colleagues, best friends, family. If asked, what would they say about how well you listen? Do you often misunderstand assignments, or only vaguely remember what people have said to you? If so, you may need to improve your listening skills. These suggestions may assist you in your listening improvement:
·         Become aware of biases and filters that keep you from listening effectively.
·         Identify the aspects of listening that you need to improve upon.
·         Get comfortable with silence.
·         Monitor your body language, facial expressions, and other nonverbal signals that might appear negative.
·         Listen between words for feelings.
·         Give signals that you are listening.
·         Take notes.
·         Hear people out before cutting in with your reply.
·         Don’t begin answers with “I.”
·         Learn to ask nonaggressive questions.
·         Understand that listening does not mean agreeing.
Listening skills can have a dramatic effect on your personal and professional success. By listening, you get listened to. Listening builds relationships and wins trust.

Questions
1.    Why is listening so important? How can it affect not only your learning, but success or failure in the business world?

2.    Describe the 4 types of listening as explained in Chapter 2. After you compare/contrast the different types, comment on which one you believe you spend most of your day doing. *Do not copy and paste ideas, but make sure you put the information in your own words.

3.    Your text comments on 6 different “Poor Listening Habits”. Briefly explain the 6, and then pick 2 that you feel you are the worst at.

Super Bowl Commercial Review (Post Game)

Objective: Understand basic marketing/promotion principles through Commercial Advertising

Success Criteria: Students will be able to evaluate this years Super Bowl Advertisements and compare shared elements of the ads they have previously deemed "successful" from past years.

________

Well the Super Bowl is over, and at least the Broncos didn't lose this year. However the Super Bowl Ads were quite intriguing, and many are leaving their mark the day after. It seems as though gone might be the days of scandalous and scantily clad women, replaced with more emotional, sometimes quite "deep" advertisements. Please complete the questions below based on this year’s super bowl commercials.

For the following questions, make sure you go into detail and provide your opinion in a well written response.

1. What ad(s) did you find most entertaining, and why?
2. What ad(s) did you find to be the worst, and why?
3. Which ad(s) did you think were most effective, and why?
4. Which ad(s) were you most willing to share (email, tweet, talk about) with a friend?
5. Which ad(s) featured well-known personalities? Did you see this as an increase or decrease as compared to years past? Why?
6. How was social media used inside the broadcast; how did you use it, if at all?

7. Current “Ad Polls” have revealed some major uproar with immigration and political undertones invading the commercial scene. Two commercials in particular "Budweiser and 84 Lumber" are getting the most attention a day after.

In your opinion, do you feel as though these two advertisements hit the mark/missed the mark and belonged/didn't belong in a Super Bowl lineup. Please Elaborate.

We are going to look back at some of the best and worst, as well as see how things have changed when it comes to business advertising. Please answer the following questions on your own blog. Don’t copy the questions, just rephrase the question in your answer using complete ideas and sentences.

1. Why does the Super Bowl get such tremendous media attention every year?
2. What makes advertisers want to put their ads on this once-a-year sporting event?
3. Why does ad time cost $4 million for just one 30-second ad?
4. How do advertisers create buzz about their ads, even before the game is broadcast, and which company/commercial has already done this prior to Sunday’s game?
5. Which ad(s) are you looking forward to viewing and why?
6. How do advertisers make money from their Super Bowl spots?
7. How was social media used, if at all, by advertisers and the game itself?

For the last long response question, please use the following links to view some Advertisements and Commercials from past Super Bowls:
