Super Bowl Advertisements (Pre Game)

Objective: Understand basic marketing/promotion principles through Commercial Advertising

Success Criteria: Students will be able to research and identify successful Super Bowl Advertisements and compare shared elements of the ads.

The hype and spending when it comes to commercials and advertisements during the Super Bowl is astronomical. There have been both successes and failures, as well as some pretty good memories from super bowl commercials. We are going to look back at some of the best and worst, as well as see how things have changed when it comes to business advertising. Please answer the following questions on your own blog. Don’t copy the questions, just rephrase the question in your answer using complete ideas and sentences.

1. Why does the Super Bowl get such tremendous media attention every year?
2. What makes advertisers want to put their ads on this once-a-year sporting event?
3. Why does ad time cost $4 million for just one 30-second ad?
4. How do advertisers create buzz about their ads, even before the game is broadcast, and which company/commercial has already done this prior to Sunday’s game?
5. Which ad(s) are you looking forward to viewing and why?
6. How do advertisers make money from their Super Bowl spots?
7. How was social media used, if at all, by advertisers and the game itself?

8. After you spend some time researching past advertisements and commercials please elaborate on your favorite and least favorite Super Bowl Ads from the past. Go into detail on what caught your attention in the good ads, and what you were turned off by in the bad advertisements. Also elaborate on the success or failure these ads brought the specific companies based on what you know (For Example was this ad maybe the companies breakthrough or was it the beginning of their demise, and why).
